Experience has taught us that it is the apparently unfeasible assignments that lead to the most innovative solutions. The only way to find a new way is to leave the beaten track. Our projects are a perfect example of this. The end-user is always at the forefront. Location and building type follow on from this. The building is not the end, just the means.
When founder & CEO Coen van Oostrom started OVG at the age of 27 a lack of financial means forced him to create his own chances. It is his energy and ambition that has thus created the OVG method. Since then everyone joining OVG has shared the same enthusiasm and passion for our profession. This is what makes OVG so enterprising.
For us sustainability means managing the available resources as cleverly as possible in order to provide people with buildings that are not only beautiful but affordable and environmentally responsible as well. Having our own Sustainability Center enables us to continuously stay ahead of the market. Because finding the best green innovations for our clients is what we are all about.
As far as we are concerned property development is the best job in the world. Every day is an inspiration – bringing so many different expertises together and working together towards a common goal. Even when someone other than OVG does it. Here, you can read about everything that enthuses us and what makes us proud to be a property developer.
His Royal Highness the Prince of Orange today officially opened Van Oord’s new head office in the presence of hundreds of guests and Van Oord employees. The Prince unveiled the name of the building: “De Nieuwe Maas” (The New River Meuse).
Sustainable, maritime character
The new office on the Schaardijk in Rotterdam is owned by Van Oord and has been developed by OVG Projectontwikkeling. The around 14,000 sqm building has a sustainable and maritime character. The maritime aspect is emphasized by the waterside location, the use of a lot of wood, and the architectural design with balconies and terraces. All this is reminiscent of the bridge of a ship. Sustainability was an important element in the design and construction, and is present most clearly in the sedum on the roofs and the heat/cold storage system. Van Oord was closely involved from the very beginning in the design and fitting out of the building, and imposed its own stamp on the new premises.
Important training location
Besides somewhere people work, the new building is also somewhere they are trained. For example, the head office has simulators for the company’s most important working vessels. CEO Pieter van Oord explains: ‘The simulators – part of which we developed in house – show the outside view from the trailing suction hopper dredger, the cutter suction dredger, and the backhoe dredger. We use them to train our fleet crew. This training programme forms part of the Van Oord Academy, which comprises all our development and training programmes.’
Extension
There are some 700 employees working at the new building. Van Oord has also purchased an adjoining plot of land for a future extension
